Chasing New Suns

Collected Stories

Seven tales of mind, heart, and spirit from award winning science fiction writer Lance Robinson.

From Apartheid era South Africa to humanity’s first foray beyond the solar system, from precarious ecosystems in northern Alberta to the shiny glam of time-adept neocolonialists between the stars, these are stories of possibility.

As the rifle evaporates into wisps of memory and the telescopic sight becomes a television on the other side of the evolving room… he begins to remember this new universe, how Tutu did not die in prison, nor Mandela, how Apartheid was brought down in ‘94…

“Lance Robinson is an exciting new voice in hard science fiction. Prepare to be amazed.”

– Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-
winning author of The Downloaded

Contents

This thought-provoking collection includes:

  • The Writers of the Future Award first place winning story “Five Days Until Sunset”
  • “Communion”, a haunting story of guilt, empathy, and human connection
  • “Money, Wealth, and Soil”, which explores the relationship between greed and nobler human motivations, as a collective humanity attempts to incentivize the restoration of the world’s ecosystems
  • “Problem Solving”, a witty satire on neocolonialism and post-modern blahs
  • “The Thursday Plan”, a story of an alternate history in which Apartheid never ended in South Africa
  • “The Gig of the Magi”, a satirical take on finding love while grinding it out day to day in a world where the gig economy has run amok
  • “Chasing the Sun”, which continues the spiritual quest begun in “Five Days Until Sunset”.

Chasing New Suns is science fiction with heart.

“I greatly enjoyed reading all of it. [The] scenarios are highly imaginative…. For me, ‘Money, Wealth, and Soil’ was the highlight: a terrific story on a deeply relevant theme that has a wry and totally credible take on irredeemable human nature. Bravo!”

– Nicholas Ruddick, Canada’s leading scholar of science fiction, and author of The Fire in the Stone and Science Fiction Adapted to Film

Between the three ferries, three hundred fifteen had been brought down to the planet surface, and by the time the last hibetank had been opened, two hundred eighty-eight emerged alive. But this meant not only that twenty-seven people died coming out of hibernation, but also that one hundred fifty-four were unaccounted for.

Reviews of Chasing New Suns

and the stories in it.

“Seven stories from the same imagination, and all of them terrific. But absolutely and definitely positively not all the same – at all…. There’s humor in ‘Problem Solving’, alternate history in ‘The Thursday Plan’, the loneliness of space in ‘Communion’ and a sad turned happy updated homage to O.Henry’s classic ‘The Gift of the Magi’ in ‘The GIG of the Magi’ to round out a stellar collection.

“If you’re an SF reader looking for a new author’s worlds to explore, chase down a copy of Chasing New Suns.”

“[Robinson] creates smart, savvy, kind and compassionate characters…. After finishing ‘Five Days Until Sunset’, I sat quietly and reflected on what I had read. And on where I was right now. And the enduring atmosphere of reslience and hope that Robinson had managed to infuse in this story…. Highly recommended.”

– Michael Sobota, The Chronicle Journal

“‘Five Days Until Sunset’ by Lance Robinson wraps wisdom, warmth and vision into dreams of a far distant, future planet.”

Aurealis, Australia’s SF Magazine

“If you’re looking for science-fiction short stories akin to Asimov and Clarke that tackle social problems through a contemporary lens, look no further than Lance Robinson’s Chasing New Suns…. His characters are empathetic and relatable, and Robinson’s humanistic perspective makes it easy to root for them.”
